Haverthwaite Railway Station is the Lake District's only standard gauge preserved railway.
The station
with its engine sheds, picnic area, restaurant, gift shop, car and coach park is situated on the A590 near Newby Bridge.
Lakeside Station is on the southern end of Lake Windermere and is approximately 9 miles and approximately a 14 minute drive from Beech Hill House.
The station and line is run by volunteers who can be found throughout the railway system working both behind the scenes, on the track, signalling, carriage and locomotive repairs and as booking clerks, buffet attendants, ticket inspectors, guards, engine footplate cleaners, firemen and drivers.
Take a trip on the steam railway to Lakeside, visit the Lakes Aquarium then enjoy a cruise around Lake Windermere stopping off at various places including Ambleside then back to Haverthwaite on the steam railway through the ever changing scenery of the southern end of the Lake District. The boat timetable matches the steam railway times making a very enjoyable day out no matter what the weather is like.
As well as taking a ride on a steam train walk around the engine sheds and have a snack in the station restaurant, which is situated in comfortable surroundings of The Old Station House located on Haverthwaite Railway Station platform.
Special events are held throughout the year including ghost trains, Thomas weekends, Diesel weekends, Family Fun weekends, Teddy Bear weekends, Pensioner days, Witches and Wizard week and Santa weekends. The details of which can be obtained from:
